Change Is Coming

Julie Murphy • January 13, 2015

change-is-coming I don’t know you personally, but I have an idea who you are. You’re a parent, and your children mean the world to you. You are a professional, and you want your job to feed you both literally and figuratively. You are committed to creating a better, more fulfilling life and you know that a part of that means improving the financial situation you are currently in.

And I know one more thing about you: you may be ready to make a change. A big change. One that will take you on a journey towards the life of you dreams.

I get it. I’ve been there. I know what it’s like to know there is more out there – to know that, although my life is find just the way it is, I am capable of more – but feeling overwhelmed and terrified at the thought of shifting. Opening up a finance firm with an emphasis on emotions and a loft office? Not too many people in this business thought it was a great idea.

But I knew my strengths; I was certain that the lessons I learned while on my own personal journey to financial fitness could help people, so I took the risk and made the change.

Although I believe the best time to for a new start could be any time, the New Year gives us all a chance for a clean break from old habits and a fresh start for the new, healthier ones. So what does that new beginning look like for you?

Before we dive into that, let’s do some troubleshooting up front. Sometimes we get down on ourselves – when one area of our lives is out of harmony, everything else all of sudden doesn’t look or feel so great either. But not everything in your life needs an overhaul. As tempting as it may be to see everything that’s wrong and plan to change each and every thing on that list, that isn’t the best recipe for success.

To be truly successful in the realm of long-term change, you have to have both the desire to change and the capacity to accept where you are right now. Accepting where and who you are right now is crucial in not only making improvements, but also learning to love exactly who you are.

Action step

And that’s the big secret to making lasting changes: loving yourself every step of the way. Why? Because you’ll hit plateaus. You’ll face obstacles. You’ll get scared, confused and down on yourself and your progress. But having that foundation of loving who you are – regardless of what the world says you are supposed to be – will stay with you as life ebbs and flows.

This week, determine the spots in your life that could benefit from a new beginning or a reconfiguration. Break those areas of your life down into steps you can take and find a way to devote some time every day to work towards those goals. Remember that things won’t change overnight, but you will and you can.
